Chapter No.9 Chords of a Circle Important Definitions: 1) Circle A circle is the set of points in the plane which are at a constant distance from a fixed point. OR A circle is the locus of a moving point in the plane which is always equidistant from a fixed point. Centre of a Circle: The fixed point of a circle is called centre of a circle. Radial segment: A line segment joining the centre to the any point on the circle is called radial segment. Radius: The length of line segment joining the centre to any point on the circle is called radius of a circle. Circumference of circle: The length of a circle is called circumference of circle. OR The boundary traced by moving point is called circumference of circle. Interior of a circle: The internal area(part) of a circle is callad interior of a circle. Exterior of a circle: The external area(part) of a circle is callad exterior of a circle. Arc: Any portion of circumference of a circle is called arc. Minor Arc: An arc smaller than half circle is called minor arc. Major Arc: An arc greater than half circle is callad major arc. Chord: A line segment joining any two points on the circle is callad chord. Diameter: A chord passing through the centre of a circle is called diameter. OR The greatest chord of a circle is known as diameter. Half Circle: A diameter of a circle divides a circle into two equal parts each part is called half circle. Segment of Circle: A chord of a circle divides the circle into two parts these parts are called segment of a circle. Minor Segment: The included area between minor arc and the chord is called minor arc. Major Segment: The included area between major arc and the chord is called major arc. Sector of a circle: The sector of a circle is an area bounded by any two radii and the arc intercepted between them. Minor Sector: Minor sector of a circle is an area bounded by any two radii and minor arc intercepted between them. Major Sector: Minor sector of a circle is an area bounded by any two radii and major arc intercepted between them. Central angle: A central angle is made by two radii at the centre of a circle.
